My Sea-Teacher experience wasn't just confined to the classroom; it was also a fantastic opportunity to explore the rich culture and history of Iloilo. Every weekend was a new adventure, a chance to immerse myself in the local way of life and discover the hidden gems of this beautiful province. Here's a glimpse into my weekend explorations:

City Tours: Unveiling Iloilo's Charms

Every Saturday was dedicated to exploring different parts of Iloilo. These city tours provided a comprehensive overview of the province's history, architecture, and natural beauty.

9 November 2024: Iloilo City Center – A Tapestry of History and Modernity

My first city tour took me to the heart of Iloilo City. We visited a fascinating array of historical and cultural landmarks, including Museo Iloilo, offering a glimpse into the region's past, and the National Museum of the Philippines, showcasing the country's rich heritage. We also explored the impressive Iloilo Provincial Capitol, a testament to the province's governance, and delved into specific aspects of Filipino history at the Museum of Philippine Maritime History and the Museum of Philippine Economic History. The vibrant Plaza Libertad, the beautiful San Jose Placer Church, and the imposing Iloilo City Hall provided further insights into the city's character. A touch of romance awaited at the Iloilo City Garden of Love, while the majestic Molo Church and the elegant Molo Mansion showcased the city's architectural grandeur. We then ventured to the Villa Arevalo District Plaza, experiencing local life, and enjoyed the modern amenities of Festive Walk Mall. A dose of contemporary art awaited at the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Arts, and finally, we admired the historical Jaro Church and the surrounding Jaro Plaza. This comprehensive tour truly captured the diverse facets of Iloilo City.

16 November 2024: Southern Iloilo – Faith, Heritage, and Nature

This tour took me south, exploring the coastal towns and their unique attractions. The magnificent Miagao Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was a highlight, showcasing stunning architecture and rich history. We also visited the Baraclayan Weaving Center, witnessing the intricate artistry of local weavers and learning about their traditional crafts. The serene San Joaquin Campo Santo, a historic cemetery with unique architecture, provided a moment for reflection. Finally, we enjoyed the natural beauty and diverse attractions of Garin Farm, a popular agritourism destination.

24 November 2024: Northern Iloilo – Beaches, Farms, and Eco-Parks

My northern Iloilo adventure showcased the region's natural wonders and eco-tourism initiatives. We relaxed on the beautiful Alvarez Beach in Carles, enjoying the sun and the sea. A visit to the Terra Verde Heritage Farm in Ajuy provided insights into sustainable agriculture and local farming practices. Finally, we explored the Pedada Mangrove Integrated Eco-Park, learning about the importance of mangrove ecosystems and enjoying the tranquility of nature.

Cultural Activities: Connecting with Local Traditions

Sundays were dedicated to experiencing Iloilo's vibrant culture through interactions with local personalities and visits to significant cultural venues.

  • 10 November 2024: Sulu Garden with Ma’am Salome: Spending time with Ma’am Salome at the Sulu Garden was a truly enriching experience. She shared stories about local traditions, folklore, and the significance of the garden itself. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with the local community and learn about their cultural heritage firsthand.

  • 17 November 2024: Casa Nena Hotel and Resort with Ma’am Jureca: My visit to Casa Nena Hotel and Resort with Ma’am Jureca was another memorable cultural experience. The resort itself showcased local architecture and design, while Ma’am Jureca shared her insights into Iloilo's history and culture. These personal interactions added depth and meaning to my understanding of the region.

Tourism Enrichment: Deepening My Understanding

25-26 November 2024: Miagao Tourism Information Center – Municipality of Miagao: My two-day visit to the Miagao Tourism Information Center was a valuable opportunity to learn more about the municipality's tourism initiatives. I gained insights into the local attractions, cultural heritage, and efforts to promote sustainable tourism. This experience provided a deeper understanding of the region's tourism industry and its importance to the local community. It was a fitting end to my exploration of Iloilo, solidifying my appreciation for its rich history, vibrant culture, and natural beauty.

Teaching Demonstration at MNHS: A Journey of Growth and Discovery at Miagao National High School

My Sea-Teacher journey at Miagao National High School (MNHS) was an incredible experience, filled with learning, challenges, and immense personal growth. The teaching demonstration segment was particularly transformative, allowing me to put theory into practice and experience the realities of classroom teaching firsthand. This section of my blog details my journey through this crucial phase.

11-15 November: Laying the Foundation – Orientation, Class Observation, and Teaching Assistantship

The first week was all about immersion and preparation. It began with a thorough orientation, introducing me to the school's culture, the faculty, and the students. This was crucial for understanding the context in which I would be teaching. Following the orientation, I embarked on a period of intensive class observation. Sitting in on various classes, I was able to witness experienced teachers in action, absorbing their teaching styles, classroom management techniques, and interactions with students. This was like watching a master at work, and I took copious notes, trying to capture the nuances of effective teaching.

Beyond observation, this week also involved working closely with my assigned classroom teacher as a teaching assistant. This hands-on experience was invaluable. I assisted with tasks like leading small group activities, leading the ice-breaking, and sharing my experience. Perhaps most importantly, I collaborated with my mentor teacher on lesson plan consolidation. We discussed curriculum objectives, teaching strategies, and assessment methods. This collaborative process allowed me to understand the rationale behind each lesson and provided a solid foundation for my own teaching. It was a period of intense learning, absorbing as much as I could from the experienced educators around me.

18-20 November 2024: Taking the Reins – Teaching in the Classroom

The second week marked a significant step – I finally got to take the reins and teach my own classes. This was both exciting and nerve-wracking! Putting my carefully crafted lesson plans into action was a real test. I taught a variety of lessons, covering different topics within the assigned subject. This experience allowed me to apply the pedagogical knowledge I had gained and experiment with different teaching approaches. It was a chance to find my own voice as a teacher.

Throughout the week, I was closely monitored and evaluated by my mentor teacher. Their feedback was invaluable, providing constructive criticism and highlighting areas for improvement. These observations and discussions helped me refine my teaching techniques and address any challenges I encountered. The process wasn't always easy, but it was incredibly rewarding. Each day brought new learning experiences and helped me grow more confident in my abilities. I learned to adapt to unexpected situations, manage classroom dynamics, and most importantly, connect with my students.

21-25 November: Reflecting and Learning – A Week of Introspection



The final week of my teaching demonstration was dedicated to reflection and consolidating the lessons I had learned. This involved a thorough review of my students' overall performance. We discussed their progress, strengths, and areas where they needed additional support. This reflection wasn't just about evaluating the students, it was also about evaluating my own teaching. I analyzed what worked well, what could be improved, and what I had learned about effective teaching practices.

The week also involved in-depth discussions with my mentor teacher about the lessons learned throughout the entire teaching demonstration period. We talked about specific challenges I faced, strategies I employed, and the impact of my teaching on the students. These discussions were incredibly insightful, providing me with a deeper understanding of the teaching profession and the importance of continuous reflection and improvement. This final week was crucial for synthesizing my experiences and transforming them into valuable lessons that I will carry with me throughout my teaching career. It was a time for growth, solidifying the knowledge and skills I had gained and preparing me to continue learning and developing as an educator.

This experience was one of the most rewarding in my life. Not only did I get the chance to share my knowledge, but I also learned a lot about the culture, education, and life in the Philippines. Getting to Know Miagao National High School

Miagao National High School is a public high school located in Miagao City, Iloilo province, Philippines. The school has a long and rich history and has contributed immensely to educating the younger generation of the Philippines.

Education System

The education system in MNHS follows the curriculum set by the Philippine Ministry of Education, otherwise known as DepEd (Department of Education).

DepEd is the executive department of the Philippine government responsible for primary and secondary education throughout the country. DepEd has a very important role in improving the quality of education in the Philippines. Some of DepEd's main roles include:

  • Curriculum Development: DepEd is in charge of developing a curriculum that is in line with the needs and development of the times. This curriculum serves as a reference for all schools in the Philippines in carrying out teaching and learning activities.
  • Teacher Procurement and Training: DepEd is responsible for the procurement and training of qualified teachers. These teachers will be in charge of educating and guiding students in all corners of the Philippines.

Campus Introduction and History

ISAT-U MC is located in Miagao, Iloilo, Philippines, and is part of the Iloilo Science and Technology University. The college is located along the highway about 500 meters from the town plaza and the Miagao Church. The site is titled and covers 10.33 hectares. The campus was originally established as Miagao High School in 1958, later transforming into Miagao Vocational School. Over time, the institution evolved into a university that focuses on science and technology. In 2015, the campus officially became part of ISAT-U through a law that changed its status to a university.

A Glimpse of My Sea-Teacher Student Exchange Journey

Mabuhay! 

I'm Lia Kamilatun Nikmah, usually called Lia. I'm a student studying English, and I am now in my fourth year. Unexpectedly, in this fourth year, I got the opportunity to go abroad, namely to the Philippines to take part in this Sea Teacher program. At first, I was scared, because this was the first time I went abroad alone, without my parents. I am very grateful and thankful to my parents for allowing me to join this program, especially my mother, it might be very hard to let me live independently in another country because I am an only child. Thank you very much. With just one friend, Isna, we traveled together from Indonesia to the Philippines, both of us for the first time abroad, and neither of us knew each other before. We traveled for almost 1 full day; it was tiring but also fun.

Arrive at the Ninoy Aquino Airport in Manila.

Upon arrival in Manila then we continued our flight to Iloilo. Upon arrival in Iloilo, we were warmly welcomed by the Iloilo campus team, they were very kind and warm. A few days later we got the news that we were placed in the Miag-ao campus, a place that sounded unfamiliar to us. I didn't know what it would be like there, I was still scared. But thanks to our first buddies, Jenny and Honey. They approached us with a warm welcome. At first, I didn't realize that they were both from Miag-ao, but then I realized on the way to Miag-ao there were two of them in the car. Haha.

To make a long story short, we were already in the campus dormitory, accompanied by our dearest buddies every day. Every week there are new buddies, and we get to know many people here. Starting when we attended the opening, unexpectedly everyone seemed excited about our arrival, we were warmly welcomed, and every time we passed by campus people, they always greeted and smiled by saying “Good morning, afternoon, evening...” Hahaha. And maybe it surprised us a bit that people here are so friendly. And it made me miss Indonesia again, and the friendly people too.

Regardless, I'm enjoying my new life in Miag-ao, they're very kind and like family. Always asking us how we're doing, if we're comfortable, if there's anything we need or not, how you're doing, if you're okay, how your day is going. It touched my heart. They didn't let me feel strange in a foreign country. They are like a home to me. Ma'am Noeme, Ma'am Cate, Ma'am Salome, Ma'am Jureca, Ma'am Sheila, Sir Immanuel, Sir Jude, Manang Jenny, Manang Arnellie, Manang Don, Honey, Sheena, Ronave, Dhersh, Niki, all the student’s ambassador, and many more I can't mention one by one.

Day after day passed, until it was time for the Teaching Practice. The first time I entered the school they looked at me with astonished eyes, I knew they were probably thinking “Who is she, why is she dressed like that, where is she from?” But after a few meetings, thanks to Ma'am Sheila as my teacher supervisor, they finally became normal and friendly to me, like Filipinos in general. Haha. I will probably never forget that I was allowed to share knowledge about Islam at Miagao National High School (Senior High School). It was an amazing experience, which I never imagined before. Understanding differences, tolerance, and respect for each other despite the many differences in religion, culture, customs, and habits.

Time goes by so fast, I will miss the people of that school, Miagao National High School, so much. A place where I learned, grew, and understood the social differences of schools, the differences in curriculum and teaching methods, and so much more. It's quite different from Indonesia. And with that difference, I can take the positive side to apply when I later teach in Indonesia maybe.

Aside from teaching at school, we also had a tour of Iloilo City, from the north end to the south end of the city. There were many beautiful and historical places that we visited, we learned many things ranging from cultural diversity, history, characteristics, city icons, city beauty, and many more. Iloilo with its city warmth, made me want to stay longer. I will keep this story as a story full of warmth. And I hope this journey doesn't end here, I hope I can visit next time, though I don't know when. I will miss all of you in Iloilo very much, thank you for all the kindness and warmth you gave us, we will never forget it. I wish you all good health and happiness. Let's meet next time. See ya!

Hi everyone! Before I share my experience with you, let me introduce myself. I'm Lia Kamilatun Nikmah, I'm a student studying English Education at Muria Kudus University Indonesia, now in my fourth year. At the end of my time in college, I had the opportunity to join the Sea-Teacher Students Exchange Program Batch 10 organized by The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO). 

Have you ever imagined teaching in a school in another country? Meeting students from a different culture, experiencing the daily life of local people, and tasting specialties you've never tried before? Well, this Sea-Teacher program is the perfect opportunity to make that dream come true!

So, in this part, I would like to explain about this program.

What is the Sea-Teacher Program?

The SEA-Teacher Student Exchange Program, initiated by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), is a dynamic exchange program that brings together student teachers from universities across Southeast Asia. It's a chance to experience teaching in a different cultural context, broaden your perspectives, and develop invaluable skills as a global educator. Cool, right?

Collaboration Between Muria Kudus University and Iloilo Science and Technology University

This particular Sea-Teacher partnership unites students from Muria Kudus University in Indonesia and Iloilo Science and Technology University in the Philippines. This collaboration fosters cross-cultural understanding, strengthens educational ties between the two institutions, and provides student teachers with an enriching experience in a diverse learning environment.
